Over the centuries, Marseille Provence has been able to preserve its many traditions and legendary art de vivre.
It has countless savours to excite the palate: its famous bouillabaisse, panisses, aioli, navettes, pastis, pompes à l’huile and pesto soup to name just a few.
Local life in Provence revolves around the markets, with their vibrant colours and delicate aromas engulfing the senses.
A short car ride through exquisite little villages nestling in the sun-drenched hills will lead you to perfumed fields of lavender spread out between the olive trees, symbol of peace and wisdom, the fruit of which gives us the aromatic oil at the heart of Mediterranean cuisine.
Crafts are also at the heart of local traditions, with the Savon de Marseille (Marseille soap) one of the most famous examples. Know the world over, Marseille soap first appeared in the 16th century, but of the 48 soap factories that once existed only a handful remain. Their know-how is unrivalled and the soap made exclusively with olive oil, the secret ingredient in genuine Marseille soap.
The santon figurine, Provence’s world-famous emblem, originated in Marseille back in the 18th century. It’s one of the rare pieces of handicraft today still made in the traditional way. The small terracotta nativity-scene figurines are highly sought-after, with a number of fairs held each year around Christmas time.
